Background on Visualization Project

Fly Through:

Purpose: To develop a computer-based visualization tool to show existing resources in a three-dimensional view for a section of Lake Michigan bluff in Ozaukee County.

Data Sources: Land cover digitized from orthophoto; Houses, roads, hydrography, driveways from County data or from orthophoto; Digital Elevation Model (DEM) created in World Construction Set (WCS) from County two-foot contour lines.

Erosion:

Purpose: To develop a visualization tool to view how Lake Michigan bluffs erode over time.

Data Sources: Current DEM created in ArcInfo from County two-foot contour lines. DEMs used to simulate erosion processes created in ArcView using models suggested in paper by Mickelson and Edil.

Subdivision:

Purpose: To develop a method for visualizing new housing development along the coast.

Data Sources: Subdivision landcover, houses, roads, driveways and fences based on parcels boundaries from County parcel data; Outside of subdivision, land cover digitized from orthophoto; Outside of subdivision houses, roads, hydrography, driveways from County data or from orthophoto; Digital Elevation Model (DEM) created in World Construction Set (WCS) from County two-foot contour lines; trees added for effect (not based on actual locations).

Interactive:

Purpose: To explore methods for making interactive 3D scenes.

Data Sources: Land cover digitized from orthophoto; Houses, roads, hydrography, driveways from County data or from orthophoto; Digital Elevation Model (DEM) created in World Construction Set (WCS) from County two-foot contour lines.

Sunset:

Purpose: To demonstrate some of the animation capabilities of World Construction Set.

Data Sources: Land cover digitized from orthophoto; Houses, roads, hydrography, driveways from County data or from orthophoto; Digital Elevation Model (DEM) created in World Construction Set (WCS) from County two-foot contour lines; individual trees added for effect (not based on actual locations).

Inland Lakes:

Purpose: To illustrate the impacts of various zoning scenarios on shoreland development. The zoning restrictions are based on a lake classification scheme.

Data Sources: The three lake classes are based on Burnett County's Lake Classification standards. The experimental site is located on Fish Lake, Dane County, Wisconsin. There is no planned development for this parcel; it was chosen just for illustrative purposes. Topography, hydrography and road data are from Dane County data. The landcover is digitized from an orthophoto.
